Karma Yog -1 : Choice of being Choiceless
We are told to “give up expectations/ clinging to fruits of actions” and such advices on the name of Karma Yog, and all who listens to such preaching, makes constipated face arguing that such an thing or option can not be a preferred “choice” in today’s competitive world….
The error in understanding this thing about “action / outcome “pair is, it is neither any piece of advice given, nor it is an option to consider. It is statement of fact about how the law of Nature operates.
2.47 says …just the first line, when objectively understood with word by word meaning- It simply says – “We have authority and freedom (Adhikaar) ONLY to act, NEVER EVER we can have any Adhikaar over Outcome / Results.”
Let’s say, a person is eating oil dripping potato chips (his karma) and EXPECTS only to get Vitamin B12 and demands he should not get any bad cholesterol …are such expectations about natural outcome of his action logically valid?
What one gets as an ‘outcome’ / ‘effect’ when the food enters in that person’s body, is a natural process based on several other mechanism and laws and he has NO control over it. Only thing under his control is choice of eating oil dripping chips or not.
So, no great intelligence needed to understand that as such the outcome/ fruits of actions all the time are beyond our reach and control. then why make any fuss about it?
Understanding Karma, makes practice of Karma Yog effortless. Karma must be understood rightly as a non-negotiable LAW of NATURE, and it is not as any “bendable/stretchable” chewing gum kind of armchair philosophy topic for intellectual entertainment.
Before writing next page on other aspects of Karma Yog, let me reaffirm to myself 100 times. “Think before you act. Measure twice and cut once”. Because, Once a person ACTS, his part is OVER…outcome is what he must accept- willingly or unwillingly.
Being choiceless in accepting the outcome is the only ‘choice’ we are given…
